Snorkel question

Hello all
I have recently taken up snorkelling and was wondering, how important a
snorkel vest is and what is its purpose

Hi Tony,
Its purpose is to provide you with buoyancy if you are either
uncomfortable in the water, or not a partiularly floaty person.
Essentially a lifejacket to make sure you stay on the surface.
They are important if you're uncomfortable in the water.
I've never used one and have been snorkelling since I was a kid (I
grew up on an island).
If you're using a wetsuit, then a snorkel vest is not required, as the
wetsuit provides buoyancy of its own.
If you're comfortable in the water you won't need one, and will in
fact find them a hindrance as you try to duck-dive.
