Any of you WA locals out there, was Ningaloo affected by the recent
cyclones? What would it be like to dive there some time in the next
month? What's the water temperature like this time of year?

Thanks for the replies and the web sites which are very informative,
would it be better to hire a car and drive up to Exmouth (is there
any good dive spots on the way) or is it better to fly up from Perth?

I'd fly. It's a a lot of sand and not a lot else really. There is some
diving out of Carnavon, but it's apparently not as good as further north
from what some locals said.

Monkey Mia might be worth a look. It's got huge potential but last time I
was there, there were no dive shops, though I think that's changed
relatively recently. But if there's no diving going on there, I'd give it
a miss. Very overhyped and very average TBH.

Hi Jason
Thanks for the info, I spent an hour reading your trip reports on your
web pages which we very informative. I will probably fly to
Exmouth and book my diving prior to arrival. I will definitely
do a livaboard somewhere on the Barrier reef. I was interested
in reading your reports on the Maldives as my last trip there was
over 12 years ago. I also enjoyed my week on Kuredu.
If you ever see Ian Smith give him my regards as I spent a
week diving with him at Sodwana about five years ago.

Wrong on most counts. Dont worry about Monkey Mia, CALM has wrecked that
place apn!

There is some good diving on the Ablrohlos-Houtman Islands, see the
Batavia Coast Dive in Geraldton. I dont know much about Kalbarri for
diving but Some GREAT secnerary around the Gorges and Natioanl Park. And
WAY WAY before you even get close to Exmouth there is Coral Bay....guess
why it is so named. Most people I know ( bar me sob sob ) go on a
yearly pilgramige to CB. All speak hightly of it. Be careful with the
operators in Exmouth however. Them tend to be a tad expensive for whale
shark dives. but there is some great snorkling to be had down the coast
past exmouth. You go into exmouth out past the Navy base around the top
and down.

The Navy Pier at Exmouth is supposed to be a good jetty dive, lots of
Hammer heads. There is also a number of wrecks that are "Supposed"to be
shore dives, but check with Exmouth Dive Academy on that first.

Anyway I would say dont hire a car, hire a campervan because its takes a
good 2-3 days if you do the tourist thing to get there.
