| Can anyone provide an accurate read of the current water temperature in Belize? I'm trying to figure out if I need to bring a wetsuit on my liveaboard trip next week (I'd have to by a new one), or if a skin will suffice. TIA |

TIA bring something that covers your skin - I got wacked pretty hard last year by picas (jellies) at Ambergris. This was Memorial Day. The water temp was pretty good for me, but right at the margin line for most people. -- Jason O'Rourke www.jor.com |

Sharks are no danger- it's the microspic clear stuff that'll kill'ya. Wather temps right now would prolly be 82-84 degrees. Close enough. As Jason says, this is entirely a physical, personal issue in terms of what an individual can withstand. I can do a live aboard in those temps with a thick polarfleece, a 2 mil is better (for me). Live aboards add additional factors beyond the sheer volume of diving they offer. Not only is your body constantly being cooled off, but now you have gas saturation issues that complicate body heating/cooling. The body will recover more quickly and fully if it is not subjected to a bouncy shilling boat ride. Pick your live aboard with care. -- Robert "Doc" Adelman, C.I.D. Pick your live aboard with care. On my first live aboard in Belize, I was wishing for a hood by the end of the week. And this was Memorial Day week. As Jason and Doc point out, it depends on a number of factors. But, if you don't pack it, you can't use it. My tropics dive packing usually winds up with both a fleece and a 2 mil long sleeve shorty. My trip to Kona in December is going to include the 3 mil john and the aforementioned hood. The DM's on Dive Makai all recommend it. -- dillon When I was a kid, I thought the angel's name was Hark and the horse's name was Bob. |

As useful as a hood is, I just can't bring myself to wear one in warm water. The whole reason I just paid $$$ to get away was to be somewhere without it. For that matter, if I go to SoCal and get water approaching 65, I'll lose it and accept some heat loss. My ears are happier in the open and I like the feel of water on the hair. That said...if you're getting cold, you'll get the most mileage out of adding a hood, rather than going thicker on the body. -- Jason O'Rourke www.jor.com |

| Thanks everyone for the info. If it's 80 or over--I'm set with a skin! |

| We were just there last week and the water temp was about 79 -80 degree. We all wore 3mm shorties and were fine. Enjoy your trip.
