Default Diving in Belize from Cruise

I will be stopping in Belize for one day (July 10th) while on a cruise
and wanted to get some diving in. I wish I could stay longer but only
have the day. What is the best way to get some dives in and where
should I go? I am an advanced diver with about 400 dives. Is there
diving that you can get to for the day? Who is the best dive boat
opperator? Thanks for all your help.

I will also be in Cozumel for a day on July 9th. I would like to
charter a boat from Aldora diving but need 2-3 other divers to have
the boat to ourselves. If you would like to charter with me, we will
be able to go on our schedule and where we want. Please let me know.

Where in Belize is the ship stopping?

If it is Ambergris Caye, then there is plenty of diving 1/2 mile off the
shore, where the reef is. Amigos Del Mar is probably the best operator on
the island. Since the reef is so close you can easy get in 2 - 3 dives.

That sounds like my cruise the week before, with ports of call in
reverse order. Sorry I can't offer any help about shops in Belize.
Our ship stops in Belize City.

Aldora would be about my 17th choice among dive shops in Cozumel I
would use for diving. Too bad Ron Lee has left here and gone
to safer pastures (several other newsgroups). Otherwise, he would
have all kind of tips to offer about Aldora, and then tell you that
he has abandoned ALdora in favor of Venturer's shop ...

Hey, you can find all of that in the archives! )

Have fun. There should be plenty of seahorses around tis time of
the year in several sites in Cozumel. But you need to find DMs
who know where they are.

In response to several posts regarding Belize stops for Cruise shops, to the
best and most recent information I have, the ships only stop at the Government
Docks at Belize City. Ther are no places on the outer attolls that would
accomidate the typical Carribean cruise ships.

There are several day boat operators out of Belize City. If I knew what had
happened to Hugh Parkey's operation, I would recommend them but Hugh passed
away a year or so ago. He was a pioneer in Belize diving and kenw the barrier
reef inside and out. I did several dives with him after w week's stay on a
live aboard there and had a blast. You might have luck trying to contact his
wife, Terresa, at the Fort Street Guest House in the Fort George area of Belize
City. I believe that there is still an operation out of the Raddison Fort
George hotel where Hugh used to have his shop and also at Ramada hotel just
down the road a ways.

Belize is a wonderful place to visit but I can't imagine what you could do on a
typical cruise ship stop for just one day without using the cruise ship shore
excursions as there is not much to see or do in the city itself. You could go
to Go T's and buy some t-shirts and go have some drinks at the Belview Hotel
bar. There is a great local place downstairs but that doesn't get started
until after 10 pm even on the weekdays that has the local bands.

Best bet is to go to Belize and spend at least a week diving and then another
week doing the day trips to see this beautiful country and getting to know its
great people. The zoo is fun and worth a visit, Jaguar Paw offers cave tubing
which is a blast, there are Myan ruins which will make you wonder about
historic times, wildlife trecks, horseback trips through the rainforest,
fishing for permit and bonefish, and more. Have a few Belikins (the local
lager beer) for me

I did this last year. On advice of the members of this group, I booked the
dive through the cruise line. This is best because they guarantee that if
the dive boat is a little late, the ship won't leave without you. Here is
a rough outline:

Book the dive IMMEDIATLY upon embarking on the ship - dive slots fill up
fast.
The ship drops anchor a mile or so from Belize City.
A tender takes you to the dock where you meet the dive boat.
The barrier reef is several miles offshore.
We dove to 80' to the rim of a 1000' wall on the far side of the cay.
We explored the wall then went "over the top" and through the coral.
The second dive was 35' in the interior of the cay.
The boat was running late and returned us directly to the ship.
The natives running the dive boat were courteous and helpful.
The only thing that marred the experience was that a storm had just
gone through so visibility was down to only about 60' or so. The day
was overcast and there was less light to see as well.

The ship stops at Belize City. I believe that Hugh Parkey's Dive Connection
is stilling running.

Contact them and they will tell you where they can take you that will be
within the proper time parameters. The main thing you'd like to do it get
out to the Atolls. However, maybe they'll take you to Glover's which is
nice too.
