| Hi all I'd like to plan a long weekend soon in Belize, but would like feedback on where to go. Two years ago we went to Ambergris Cay and came back less than impressed. The town was noisy & the diving was just ok (although a hurricane had moved through just two weeks prior, so...). This time we were thinking of points further south, like Placencia maybe? The requirements are pretty basic: Great diving, decent accomodations (and since it will July, AC is a must :) ), a small town nearby w. cold beer and cheap food, and the option of a decent beach & fishing for the member of our group who doesn't dive. We found someone's private condo to rent on the internet last time around. Anything like that would be cool, as would a regular 'ol hotel. thanks |

| We went to Hopkins Village last spring and went on a dive day with an outfit called Humanasi. We were very pleased. Hopkins Village is DEFINITELY laid back. You can stay at Humanasi or you can stay at a lower priced place--we stayed at Jungle Jeannie's (primitive!). Hopkins Village has a web page you can visit. The village just got electricity about 14 years ago or so, that should give you a clue about the primitiveness of the area. Humanasi is quite modern and pretty. If you thought the town was noisy, why not look at staying down on the south side, where it is relatively quiet. Take a look at Caribe Island Resort . http://caribeisland.com/?lang=english&page=1 It's around 3 miles south of San Pedro Town, has a very nice beach, good pool, nice condo units, a good bar and decent restaurant. If you were willing to give Ambergris another try, I can give you the names of a bunch of places where you can eat and drink cheap and plentiful, just not fancy. I've noticed on each of my last 3 trips, the recovery from the hurricane. That said, the reef directly off of Ambergris, is not known for it's startling colors. The awesome diving is out at the Atolls, which is a 3 tank day trip. Rich, have you considered Caye Caulker? > > > "Rich" <rich@u2email.com> wrote in message > news:b98ba90e.0307021130.6ed36dde@posting.google.c om... > > Hi all > > I'd like to plan a long weekend soon in Belize, but would like > > feedback on where to go. | Are you sure that's the correct spelling? I did a search for Humanasi and found something on Japanese flowers and a porn page. The Hopkins Village page is cool, though. | That did the trick. Wonder why it didn't come up on a search? Anyway, thanks. I stayed around the corner and walked by it every day for five days. I never once saw anyone there except for a couple of maintenance people. |

You should have gone to the bar then and kept the bartender company. Albert must get lonely. |

I > remember seeing Caribe Island Resort from the boats and thinking it > looked nice... http://www.cayecaulker.org/ http://www.gocayecaulker.com/ http://www.cayecaulker.net/index.html Caye Caulker is a bit south and a tad east of Ambergris Caye. As you can see it is smaller and it is quite a bit more laid back and more quiet. |
