Thanks. I think I'll stick with DEET.

Be aware: The best DEET is 100%. 100% DEET has its own issues.

I like to buy the 100% stuff and then mix it with rubbing alcohol for
whatever percentage that I want to use... That way, you don't get the
strange smells that some of the companies put in their products...

The government up here decided that we can't make our own decisions with
regard to the amount of DEET we are willing to apply to our bodies.
Therefore, I can't get anything over 30%.

For anyone that would ship me some 95 or 97.5% Deep Woods Off . . or any
brand, I would consider that a friendly thing to do.

Which means that the other 70% is full of stinky perfumes and fillers...

Of course, you're paying for those stinky perfumes and fillers whether you
want them or not...

The only ones that have an acceptable smell to me is the Cutter
Skinsations:
http://www.drugstore.com/qxp153122_3...t_7_d eet.htm

It's only 7% DEET, but that works well enough for my typical use... These
days, I keep the pump spray bottle from the Cutter Skinsations and refill
it with the 100% DEET and dilute it with isopropyl alcohol... If you
figure that you can get an ounce of 100% DEET for about $5, it would be
the equivalent of getting the 7% Cutter Skinsations for $2.10... An added
bonus is that you don't get some strange chemical perfumey smell...

Have you considered just ordering it mail order and having it shipped to
Canada? I recently bought some canine heart worm preventative from a
company in Australia and it was cheaper than I could get it locally (since
you need a vet's prescription to buy it here in the US and my vet will not
give prescriptions since he doesn't want to cut into his profits)...

From what I understand, you really don't need to use 100% DEET on yourself
unless you are needing 10-12 hour protection... From the article
that I read, anything above around 25% is pretty much wasted with regards
to protection ability unless you are going to be out a very long time...
It suggested that you just use 25% and reapply every few hours as
necessary... I figure that if you are sweating a lot of getting into and
out of the water, you'll probably want to reapply anyway...

I'd go for it, if I could get it.

Yes.

Yes, that is correct, higher concentration equals longer protection. I like
the longer protection when I go out for the evening.

You could even add a couple of drops of your own perfume to it to make it
have a custom fragrance... <grin>

If you prefer a lotion, you can add it to whatever body lotion that you
prefer and put it on that way... Maybe an aloe gell mixed with 100% DEET?
Maybe mix it with sunscreen?

If you are going to order it, you probably should make it worth your while
and order a few ounces... Although Canada has a restriction on anything
over 30%, it is unlikely that the companies that you order it from online
will know about that restriction, so unless Canada Customs opens and
checks every package that comes in, you shouldn't have a problem getting
it into the country, whether it comes from an online order or from someone
sending it to you...

30% is considered good for 5 hours. The problem with 100% is that its
too easy to provide continuous protections at unhealthy doses
(afterall, it is a proven carcinogen). IIRC, the Army no longer uses
100%? Plus it is hell on nearly anything plastic.

*Even the 30% is hell on nailpolish.

DPT and Twinrix are a no-brainer, even for walking around NYC,
especially for walking around NYC.
Chloroquine (or whatever antimalarial is recommended) for Central and
South America.
This is also a good idea when traveling in the tropics
