| Well, besides being OT to *locations ... and spammed across many newsgroups... Rob here things that $450 US is a good **minimum starting** bid for a used 35mm Sea&Sea system. Yet another Ebay spam that should have included a Coke Alert. For a 35mm UW camera, I think I'd be more temped by what B&H has for sale right now - - brand new Nikon Nikonos V bodies for $399. | IIRC, the auction included the small S&S strobe and maybe some other stuff (Pelican-type hard case? etc). Its always possible that the net sum is worth what the spammer is asking for it, but as a minimum openining bid on an auction, its absurd... -hh |

I think over the years I spent about $800 for my identical rig. Bought some of the lenses via eBay. Of course, that doesn't include the new body, but the shop said 12 years was plenty long enough for one to last. The shop note said "poor baby, it's just plain worn out". > > > -hh -- dillon 666 permissions of the beast |

The shop note said "poor baby, it's just plain worn out". I think you two are talking about a different animal from the MX 10 camera in the subject title. The basic MX 10 is one that has a YS 40 (or something like that) flash, without which the camera is virtually useless as an UW camera. With the YS flash, the camera is capable of taking reasonably high quality pictures within the range of 2 to 5 feet, and not much more. There is a higher-quality model 35mm version that can have a strobe attachment. But the advertised one is a full SET of camera, flash, special lenses, as well as the carrying case -- a "late model" version of my original MX 10 (died four years ago after 12 years of good use), or the replacement (in 2002, died after one dive trip). The latter was discussed in rec.scuba.locations -- and the bottom line was that it was defective, but the company failed to honor its warranty; and through Matt Ando's direct contact with the Sea&Sea President I got a replacement two years after I had given up on the product completely. But that was not the END of the story. I found a nearly brand new MX-10 with the strobe attachment while doing a deep dive in Cozumel, in 2004, when I saw something yellow at depth. I suddenly found myself from ZERO to TWO MX-10 sets, while I was waiting for the replacement unit to come. The Captain convinced me that the shop that owned the camera (had a name on it) for rental to divers already had it paid for by insurance, so it was finder's keeper. I immediately gave half of it to the DM, and sold the other half at ebay as soon as I had the late-warranty replacement via Japan (as in the Matt-Ando story). My vague recollection was that I did not put ANY reserve on what I gave to an ebay-seller (who charged 30% fee for the selling price, for doing everything -- ad, mailing, collection of selling price, etc.) because it didn't appear to be worth much, but I was pleasantly surprised that it sold for more than I would have placed as the price will to sell. Meanwhile, my wife graduated to a new POS, a digital version of some camera with real strobes -- one that Dan Bracuk also owns (an identical one) and was much more satisfied with it than we are. This is a long story about MX-10 and ebay and if I have to GUESS what a used MX-10 with YS 40 will bring, I would put it no more than $200. -- Bob. |
