| 33 days 'till Ambergris Caye in Belize and already it is necessary to start planning for next year. (February) Considering Little Cayman, but always have to take into account my non diving wife, who does however very much enjoy snorkelling. Advice appreciated. Sandy Remove NOSPAM to email |

| insofar as Little Cayman, there are some strong currents (surface) there on occasion and often many boats that might freighten her. | I visit LC just after thanksgiving every year. There are not as many snorkeling opportunities as some places like Bonaire or Hawaii but there are some. Directly in front of Pirate's Point resort you can snorkel in 4-5' of water and see lots of good stuff. NOT a white sandy beach but fine once you get into the water. Just down from PP in the marine park area (200yds) you can get into the water, again 5' deep or so and have similar snorkeling. Current is mostly a non-issue. --- Lobster season opens every year during the week we're there and there are limits of lobsters taken right off the resort every night in 4' of water! No license needed by resident or visitor! At the other end of the island, East, you have Point of Sand. This faces Cayman Brac, the third Cayman island, 5 miles away. At POS you can snorkel inside the fringing reef in 4-5' of water. Friends and I were up there and saw lots of fun stuff including a nurse shark sleeping. There IS current off to the left of this site and it is posted, but if you stay right you're fine. The bad news is that this site is NOT near any of the resorts and takes a LONG bike ride or rental car ($$$) to get to. Basically 7-9 miles away from any other resort. You can snorkel inside the south side fringing reef where all the dive boats anchor and load up but the critter factor is mostly beer cans and pop bottles. On the north side, where much of the diving takes place, you CAN snorkel off the dive boat for free, assuming she's going with YOU. One of the nice things about north side sites is that many of them are multi-tiered. That is to say that you can be on the wall at 100' and closer to shore (short paddle from the boat) be in 20-25' of water to snorkel in. Not Hawaii type coral or life but fun just the same. Because of the gin clear conditions, most times <G>, she can also watch you dive below while she floats above. IF however, your spouse is a bird watcher she'll be in HEAVEN. LC is known for it's resident and migratory bird populations. We had a VERY EXPERIENCED, and jaded, birder there this year and he and his wife said they'd never experienced a better site. Take a peek at my web site for more notes about Little Cayman and Pirate's Point at: http://home.comcast.net/~tb0yd/pirates_point.htm Tim "Sandy" <sjmurraymd@NOSPAMmedscape.com> wrote in message news:uuafvvgfc91g0sf2pnks6lp6rm2gk9lckk@4ax.com... > 33 days 'till Ambergris Caye in Belize and already it is necessary to > start planning for next year.
