Diver Found Dead On Fort Lauderdale Beach

POSTED: 5:30 pm EST November 15, 2005

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Police say a diver who was swimming alone off Fort
Lauderdale Beach was found dead Tuesday afternoon. Fort Lauderdale police
said the man was wearing two scuba diving tanks at the time. His body was
found near 2800 North A1A. Investigators said that there was no sign of foul
play. The cause of the man's death has not yet been determined.

For what it's worth, there was a picture in the article that was too small
for me to be certain, but which seemed to show a jacket style BCD and a
single tank rather than the indicated twins. Perhaps the diver was carrying
a pony or Spare Air. I have no additional details at present.

The picture did not look like doubles. I have to admit, when I read the
article, I looked closely to see if the kit looked familiar, you know,
manifolded steel twins, long hose, dry suit in warm water. It looked very
much like a single and a jacket style BCD.

May be it was Bob Crownfield, Jammer, or Ron Lee (even though Bob
never scuba dives and Ron Lee only use Aldora steel tank with a Spare
Air). The Fort Lauderdale PD is investigating the possibility of

Now, now, Lee, you should do it right, even when taking a cheap shot.

I didn't take a cheap shot, but I won't deny that I was looking to see if
there was one available.
What did I get wrong?

Dead Lauderdale scuba diver identified

By Herald staff reports

browardnews@herald.com

Fort Lauderdale police have identified the scuba diver who was found dead in
the ocean on Tuesday.

Two sunbathers pulled the body of Gregory Boyce, 43,, of Rumford, Rhode
Island, out of the ocean near the 2800 block of North Atlantic Boulevard on
Tuesday, police spokeswoman Kathy Collins said.

An autopsy has revealed that the cause of death is drowning, Collins said.
Boyce's body still had scuba gear on it, and police said a gauge on the tank
indicated it was full.

No foul play is suspected, Collins said.

Interesting.

One has to wonder what a Rhode Island resident is doing solo diving in Fort
Lauderdale and how he managed to drown with a full tank.
