| Question for you (or anyone else who travels a lot in the US). My parents have finally decided to do something fun in their retirement, and are going on a huge trailer "caravan"-style tour of Central America. Problem is they have to make it from Canada to San Antonio, in late December/early January. I was wondering what route(s) you'd recommend to get from Montana to San Antonio, preferably one which goes around the mountains. Thanx Bryan |

And don't forget to have them pick up some guns in San Antonio. I'm surprised Scott of all people didn't mention this. The U.S. is dangerous to be sure, but there are bandits galore once they cross the southern border. Old folks in an RV are some seriously easy pickin' and those "Don't shoot, I'm a Canadian" stickers won't go far enough. Make sure they have the proper paperwork, though. Last time I did a serious drive through Mexico, there were "narcotrafico" inspections every few hundred miles checking for drugs heading north or guns heading south (according to the one federale nice enough to explain to me why they were bothering with narcotrafico inspections on the southbound lane). |

Not sure on the exact route, my atlas doesn't show Arizona as a state. -- dillon If you can't figure out how to unmunge my address, email me and I'll explain it. |

That's so Fuckin funny, I'm sitting in Nashville in the doctor's office parking lot by myself laughing my ass off, some one asked me if I was related to John Francis (then they saw my slacks). Let me get home tonight and look at the map, and I'll give you a good answer. The two most heart stopping things I've seen so far are the Montana Rockies and the Colorado Rockies (I-70, I-80 and I-90), but both going east to west, so I'll have to cogitate it. Where will they start from? The southwest desert bears honorable mention. East Tennessee is -very cool-, but I'm 45 years used to it. > Problem is they have to make it from Canada to San Antonio, in late > December/early January. Apparently it's popular with the old people. It actually sounds like a cool tour (all central American countries, by trailer, over ~3 months). Not what I'd want for a holiday, but whatever rocks their boat. > Let me get home tonight and look at the map, and I'll give you a good > answer. > > The two most heart stopping things I've seen so far are the Montana > Rockies and the Colorado Rockies (I-70, I-80 and I-90), but both going east > to west, so I'll have to cogitate it. They're not too concerned about scenery on the way there - they're on a tight schedule (they leave boxing day and have to be there somewhere around new years). Oh, and they drive slow - did I mention they're old? On the way back I imagine they'll spend some time looking around, but for the route south they're looking for the quickest route, preferably one which avoids the mountains. Their plan at the moment (I think, I was rather drunk this weekend) is to get to North Dakota somehow, and head south on 83. > Where will they start from? Calgary, Canada. ~300km due north of Montana. They'd probably be crossing the boarder on highway 15, unless they decide to travel east inside of Canada. Thanx for your time Bryan |
