| John Hanson wrote: > Where is the good diving in Florida right now? Any links to dive > conditions along the coast > The good diving in Florida is always anywhere from Palm Beach to the Dry Tortugas, all on the Atlantic side. Conditions anywhere in Florida are always less predictable than in most of the world's dive destinations, that's why Florida is not as popular as others. The locals just go diving and take whatever they get - sometimes great, sometimes crappy. Conditions change from hour to hour, and can be fabulous a few miles away from where they are awful. During periods of heavy rain (June - Sept) runoff can leave a lot of sediment in the water, on average viz is better in the winter. Storms sometimes raise a lot of silt off the bottom, sometimes drive the Gulf Stream in and create great viz. Thermoclines are greatest in June and July, but occasionally pop up any time of year. Currents vary from mild to wild. There are all sorts of "current conditions" reports on the dive boats' sites, and wave and water temp live from buouys along the coast. Don't bother with them, as conditions will change from the time you leave yer computer and arrive at the dive site. If you absolutely positively must have warm water, great viz, and no current on every dive, Florida is not a good destination for you. If you enjoy huge biodiversity, if you get as excited by a cluster of bluebells as you do by a flight of eagles, Florida is a wonderful place to dive. If you are an experienced diver, you will want to avoid the cattle cars of the Keys (There's great diving in the Keys, but few boats will take you to it). Most of the boats elsewhere are just transportation to the dive sites - you will schlepp your own gear, set it up, and do your own dive in buddy pairs without a guide. The natives are friendly and will usually let you tag along unless you are obviously a doofus. From Miami north is all drift diving - each buddy pair or small group (or solo diver) carries a float and goes with the current along the reef. There is very little shore diving to be done. enjoy esg |

Those who "practice the art" always are first guilty, and last to recognize. But remember, this is just entertainment. John doesn't mean anything he says here, he cant. BTW, how did you like our new trailer? |
