Default Back on line in Orlando

Just got cable (roadrunner) back four hours ago.

Power went out at about 9:00pm Friday. We were lucky and got power back
yesterday at about 4:00pm; half of our community on the west side of Orange
County didn't get it back until today, and I'm sure there are still many
thousands to the south of Orlando, and on the east side still without. They
were reading gusts of 105mph with 90mph sustained at the airport.

They had it tracking directly at us in west Orange County, but it really was
about ten miles to the east. We had a lot of big oaks blown over, broken,
split. Fortunately, that was about it. The east side of town, where a lot
of older development with the power/phone lines above ground, along with the
higher winds really took a hit, along with the Kissimmee/St. Cloud area.
Then again, this was nothing compared to where Charley made landfall. Hell,
as bad as Kissimmee got hit, Disney, and all of the other theme parks where
open for business yesterday.

George

Have you heard anything about Haines City? Got a close buddy there and
can't get through to him.

George,
Sounds like you took a pounding but others had it worse. Glad you made
it through OK.

Yes, we really consider ourselves lucky. As I just mentioned to Mike, there
are an estimated 300K people still without power in the Orlando area, within
about a fifty mile radius from what I could tell.

There's a tremendous amount of help that has arrived, and continues to
arrive from out of state. The news was speaking of convoys of power line
trucks coming in from Georgia, and elsewhere, so hopefully it will all get
pieced back together soon.

Yeah....last year, we had Isabelle move through Virginia and the Va.
Beach area took a pounding. I had planned on being in Va. Beach that
weekend to dive for a few days, and then go to the ham radio show. Even
though the storm had blown out of the area by Saturday, there was no
sense in going there since there was no power, trees down, debris in the
street, etc etc. I think they had power crews from several states away
helping there also. However, I think it was several weeks before all of
the power was restored.

Looks like we have a few days to ponder things. Earl was downgraded to a
tropical wave, but there's always the chance it could reform in the
Caribbean. Danielle is supposed to head north into the middle of the
Atlantic, but, as Charley showed us, they are not always as predicted.

60 mph? If you're gonna whine, at least whine about something big.

I have a friend there that said all he got was trees down and some really
heavy winds. Scared the Shit out of him. The eye went through Haines city
but the orlando news is not saying much about that area.

Yeah, we saw it coming as a direct hit, too, with 100mph winds. A bit
unsettling when we are used to some rain and gusts left over from hurricane
landfall. I was glad our house was built with the new codes after Andrew;
enough roofing straps to sink a battleship, and garage doors rated at
210mph.

There are people at work from Winter Park and the Conway area that are still
without power. One radiologist I work with periodically has the 18th green
of Bayhill at the bottom of his backyard, and he had power come on for 45
min Sunday, only to lose it...haven't seen him the past couple of days to
see if he got power back.

They are starting to see power company trucks in the Winter Park
neighborhoods now, so it should not be long. I heard their biggest problem
(besides voting out Progress Energy so they could take over the power
system) was getting the feeder lines from the substations back up. Around
Orlando, the report I saw had 750 miles of lines before they could start
working in to the receiving points.

Glad to hear it missed you as well.

George
