Default New National ID system proposed

Not long ago, we had a discussion of national identification. During that
discussion, I held that any universal form of identification would become a
tool of identity thieves.

This morning, I saw an article in the New York Times that should strike fear
in the hearts of all those who are concerned over the erosion of personal
privacy.

Lee

Here's an excerpt:

The Senate version of the intelligence bill includes an amendment, passed by
unanimous consent on Oct. 1, that would let the secretary of homeland
security decide what documents a state would have to require before issuing
a driver's license, and would also specify the data that the license would
have to include for it to meet federal standards. The secretary could
require the license to include fingerprints or eye prints. The provision
would allow the Homeland Security Department to require use of the license,
or an equivalent card issued by motor vehicle bureaus to nondrivers for
identification purposes, for access to planes, trains and other modes of
transportation.

If he were, we'd be paying more than $2.00 a gallon for regular.

Scary.

On a slightly related note, returned Saturday from St John and found TSA
search notices INSIDE all three of our checked bags. I don't know what
they were looking for, but apparently they didn't find it -- at lease
we didn't notice anything missing. Guess we were lucky!

"Trade freedom for security; loose both."

(Not intended to imply that TSA's actions result in any "security"!)

There is NO significant difference in the path our country will
take under Bush vs. under Kerry. I lament our future if these
men represent the best we have.
