The big news the last couple of days was that Bush has signed a bill which has a rider clause that sales tax will be IRS-Federal-1040-deductible for Tennesseans! The expected savings for an average TN tax-payer is $500. Is that an attempt to "buy votes" or what? > Tonight we will see two slimeballs out-hoping one another. Again? Which two? > >> The charming thing about Democrats is that they will believe anything. > > > > Apparently so do Republicans [see above]. > > Hell, nobody believed Bush. Even Bush doesn't believe himself, but I thought several folks in rec.scuba do. Edited/customized Riddle: Q. Wot's the difference between a XXX in an election and a YYY lady in a bathtub? <Substitute XXX and YYY by political parties of your choice.> A. One has a soul full of hope; the other hole full of soap. -- Bob. |

Is that > an attempt to "buy votes" or what? Actually, it's an attempt to make the tax system more fair. Tennessee is in the same boat as Texas in that manner. You see, there are six or seven states in the union that don't collect income taxes. In the other states, you have the opportunity to deduct your income tax from your AGI. In those six or seven states that don't collect income taxes, you don't have that opportunity. To even the score a bit, you can now deduct sales taxes in those states. But I'm sure that you probbaly already knew all of that. |

I didn't know that, and I'm in a state with no income tax. Where do I find more information on this? Lee |

I'm not sure exactly what changes may have taken place, but I'm sure you can follow the progression and find the final legislation. I'm not terribly interested because I don't itemize my deductions. For those that do, it's another tax break (radio was saying about $500-600 average in Texas - I don't know if that was AGE adjustment or actual tax break). |
