| This, of course, from all those "educated" Dem votoers that rejected THE WINNING CANDIDATE.... updated: 11:06 PM EST Marion Barry Wins Seat on D.C. Council Ex-Mayor Convicted on Drug Charges Comes Back to Washington Politics By DERRILL HOLLY, AP WASHINGTON (Nov. 2) - Marion Barry, who infamously was videotaped by the FBI smoking crack and wound up serving jail time, resurrected his political career for a second time Tuesday. Residents of one of the poorest sections of the District of Columbia picked Barry to be their new councilman. AP Barry's nickname in Washington is 'Mayor for Life.' "Oh my God!" Barry exclaimed when told of his lopsided win. Figures posted on the D.C. Board of Elections and Ethics Web site show Barry taking 95 percent of the vote against a token Republican opponent. "We're going to be the best ward in the city, we're going to turn things around," Barry promised. "Move to Ward 8 everybody, come right out here to Ward 8 where the living is good," he said. Barry, 68, served six months in prison for a federal drug conviction, then went on to win the same Ward 8 seat in 1992. That led to a fourth term as mayor, which he won in 1994. Barry declined to seek reelection in 1998. Barry scoffed at questions about his health. "I'm so tired of that question coming up," he said, adding that it's no secret he has diabetes and high blood pressure. He also had a bout with prostate cancer. After voting earlier in the day, Barry jogged spryly from the school where he voted, as camera crews scrambled to keep him in view. Sen. John Kerry easily won the D.C. presidential race, taking the city's three electoral votes. Of the city's nearly 384,000 registered voters, almost 75 percent are Democrats. "I think the new registrants, the younger voters, the cell phone users, I think they cut Kerry's way," said Mayor Anthony A. Williams. Turnout in many parts of the city appeared to be heavier than in 2000, when it was 58.1 percent. "We were falling asleep, there were so few people," Arnold Goldberger, a precinct captain in Northwest Washington, said about January's nonbinding Democratic presidential primary. Registration in the city has climbed by nearly 42,000 since then. "This time we were inundated," he said. "Everywhere I go people are saying they've never seen this many people lined up to vote this early. They're sending a message and the message is they do have a voice," said Kwame Brown, who on Tuesday won an at-large seat on the D.C. Council. Democratic D.C. Council incumbents Jack Evans of Ward 2 and Adrian Fenty of Ward 4, and At-Large Republican Carol Schwartz won easy victories, as did newcomer Vincent Gray in Ward 7. Gray, Brown and Barry all unseated incumbents in September's Democratic primary. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, D-D.C., easily won an eighth term as the district's nonvoting delegate to the House of Representatives. Norton can propose legislation but can only vote in committee. Associated Press Writers Brett Zongker, Heather Greenfield and Candace Smith contributed to this report. 11/02/04 22:05 EST Popeye Listen, strange woman lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. There are/were some areas that even I would not venture into at night. And, they are right near the Capital building (South East Wash DC). |
