Default OT -- Beware of anyone making large purchases with nickles

http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/01/08/mis....ap/index.html

3.6 million nickles = $180,000 = 45,000 lbs

For some reason, it kind of strikes me as a funny theft...

According to:
http://www.mgb.gov.ph/aveprice-metals.htm

At $6.67 a pound, 45000 pounds of nickel is worth $300150.00 US.

According to:
http://www.lme.co.uk/dataprices_daily.asp

A tonne is worth $14030 US. (Do not confuse the ton with the tonne)

45,000 pounds = 20.41166 tonnes = 286,375.59 US.

Both prices well below the face value of the coins.

but is a nickel made of nickel? or is it an alloy or a "sandwich" of
other metals like a quarter?

€ € But ask yourself what is 45,000 pounds of nickle worth as metal ?

€ At Friday's closing price, $307,503.

€ But US nickels are 25% nickel and 75% copper, which makes their metal
€ value $76,875.75 (Ni) + $47,887.88 (Cu) - $124,763.63.

And, as Rudy pointed out, 3.6 million nickels at 5 grams per coin is
18,000 kg (*2.2 lbs/kg) - 39,600 lbs, not 45,000 lbs.

But of course Feesh will accuse us of "nitpicking"

The reason is because you are a retard. That's also the reason you made
the post to a SCUBA newsgroup.

Well, as long as we're nitpicking, it's more like 2.204627 lbs/kg and one
might wonder how exact that 5 g/coin really is... According to:
http://www.usmint.gov/about_the_mint...specifications
it is 5.000 g/nickel...
There's probably a tolerance there, but with that many coins, I would expect
the average to be pretty damn close to the 5.000 gram figure...I wonder if
the weight quoted for the shipment included the weight of the packaging...

Irregardless, it's a lot of weight for the amount of money... The 18-wheeler
was probably worth nearly that much and they abandoned it...

Be on the lookout for heavily laden trucks going through the Florida toll
boths paying the entire toll in nickels...

And this would be the first time a bank inflated it's loss?
