| The subject contains several aspects that emerged from the unfocused "discussions" in rec.scuba. I came across the post below (in the archives) from another ng, in which those problems were actually discussed, seriously. I reproduce the content in full, for those in rec.scuba who were confounded and confused about the various concepts related to IQ in the Real World. -- Bob. John, I deleted the entire post you included since you didn't address anything in there. > What a foolish post (the original). IQ is such a poor indicator of the worth > or potential of a human being. I actually agree with this assessment. But that doesn't negate the fact that it's a reasonable attempt to measure "intelligence", if you excercise your logic properly. Where in what I posted or in the literature about IQ or its measurement is there a statement that says IQ is an indicator of the "worth or potential of a human being"? >I know various genius types who are barely > functional (including myself right now). Is that why you're dysfunctional that you couldn't even use the DELETE key or exercise your logic properly? I know a few of the type you refer to too -- in those who are members of the TNS (top 2% of the MENSANS). One of the reasons for this phenomenon is that whenever one is VERY FAR from the norm (in intelligence), in either direction, there are problems associated with it that are not appreciated by the average person. Some can cope with it; others can't. Very simple. In the Kingdom of the Blind, the one-eye-man is NOT King. Instead, he would be far happier and cope with society much better if he gouge his own eyes to become blind like the rest. I either heard that somewhere or made it up myself. > I know other average people who > accomplish great things. Give me a man with determination and drive versus a > man (or woman) with great potential to accomplish a task anytime. > John Blubaugh Of course there are average people who accomplish "great things" in the Kingdom of the Blind, according to the criteria of "great things" perceived by the Blind. John, you're just showing your self-pity that you're (in your confession): > the genius types who are barely functional (including myself right now). So, instead of ranting irrationally in this thread, why don't you pick yourself up and use whatever intelligence you have to make yourself more functional in society instead of griping about IQ as a measure of intelligence? -- Bob. |
