| Has anyone here, when not writing about guns, thought about having their own compressor so they can fill their own air bottles? It would seem that, especially boat owners that do a lot of diving from their boat and have the diesel power to drive a compressor, would find it convenient. Any thoughts on the viability (liability?) of this idea much appreciated. Padeen |

Most have gone with either a diesel or gas driven portable to run out on deck rather than hooking it up in a hot engine room. Heat is deadly to an air compressor and most engine rooms can get quite hot. | Thanks Ray. What brands do consider most reliable? I don't like the thought of carrying gas, but I'd expect a diesel-driven unit would be much heavier/more expensive. Probably the two most popular small portables are the Bauer Junior-II and the MaxAir-35. Both are compact, light enough to haul around the deck (with a little help if you are an old fart like me) and affordable for most boaters. The drawbacks to both are that they are only available in gas or electric models and they are both rated for individual use. That means they are not for constant running. That is due to heat dissipation. They just need a little time between fills to cool. Personal opinion ... the German made Bauer is just a little higher quality than the MaxAir (an American refit of the ColtriSub machine), but they cost a little more as well. However, with proper maintenance, you shouldn't have problems with either for a LONG time.
