Not exactly Detroit area, but if you can make a weekend out of it, I'd suggest Tobermory, ON. It's about a 5-6 hour drive from Detroit, IIRC. http://www.tobermory.org/diving.html It's great camping, hiking, kayaking, diving, or even snorkeling, BUT - it is damn cold water, even in summer. I did it in a wetsuit, but the temps were a definite consideration in planning dive time and depth. Saw parts of very old schooners and steamers - from the late 1800's, and more - it was interesting, esp. if you are into marine archaeology.
