I'll be away for a week in the war-neutral country of Switzerland on a top-secret fondue tasting mission, my first major non-diving trip in years. I'm sure Scott will still be here when I get back. |

Hope my suggestions were helpful...I'd be curious to hear what your planned itinerary finalized to (offline's fine). FYI, potentially very important for your trip: **Yesterday**, Switzerland got hit with a major rainstorm, which has resulted in serious flooding in several areas. Bern was definitely been hit; not sure where else. Check Google News for more info. If you see/hear the statistic of "100 liters per square meter" (which I heard last night), this is roughly equal to 4 inches of rainfall. -hh |

Fortunately, now that I've read your rainstorm warning, we're not doing near as much hiking as I had expected. It's a short trip and I'm in it for the quantity, not the quality. If we do all-day or multi-day hikes that take a lot of time to get to, there's not going to be much time for anything else. I've checked the forecast and it looks like your rainstorm was not an isolated event. It's going to be raining the whole time we're there. So I think I made the right decision spending more time in a car with a roof over our heads then out on some remote trails subjected to flash floods and general wet misery. I did a lot of hiking in the rain when I lived in the PNW and I've learned to appreciate the sun. That said, we did plan entire day walking self-tours of Zurich and Geneva, so I'll have to buy us a couple umbrellas when we get there (having lived in the PNW, I no longer own one, and now that I live in the desert I don't miss it). Itinerary is as follows: spend time in Zurich, drive to Geneva via the Emmenthal Valley with a lunch stop and tour in Gruyeres, spend time in Geneva, drive to Vitznau (Lucerne) via north Italy and Locarno and the St. Gotthard's Pass, spend time in Vitznau where we'll finally get some hiking in across the lake at Beckenried, and back home. Short, but sweet. > FYI, potentially very important for your trip: > > **Yesterday**, Switzerland got hit with a major rainstorm, which has > resulted in serious flooding in several areas. Bern was definitely been > hit; not sure where else. Thanks for the heads up. Normally I check the weather, but I had such a good feeling about this trip that I didn't bother. At this point, I'm not sure what we can do about it, but I'm just glad we didn't plan more hiking. The weather forecasts call for light rain so that won't be so bad. What worries me is that clouds are going to spoil our postcard views of the mountains. That's what I get for not diving. |
