I often wondered how >he got such great shots and he used to say it took a roll or two Yeah, but it's sooooo much cheaper and easier with digital media. I haven't gotten into u/w photography, but I imagine it's much the same as on terra firma -- try to compose your shots, be quick, take lots of shots, and hope to get lucky. U/w, you're also going to have to fight currents, etc. I have a Nikon D70S, and it's been a great camera. Took me an evening and a few glasses of Scotch to get through the damn book. I've been using PaintShop Pro v9 to touch up the photos, and it's so far my favourite tool. Gotta try Photoshop, despite the learning curve. I was aware of contract, colour depth, etc, but I discovered the "unsharp mask" -- it does the opposite from what it sounds, sharpening everything (you have to avoid the temptation to overuse it). Amazing how you can save photos by cropping and touching up. |

There are better ways of doing that. Dennis |

That's why I was asking. Thanks for clearing that up. Like I said, my new tool is quite nice. I shot 139 wide-angle shots on two dives yesterday and 138 of them are completely sharp and focused. Take out another 5 or 6 that weren't the best exposures (one strobe died halfway through the second dive), and another 10 or 20 that weren't the best composition, and I'm left with about 100 or so that are quite nice, maybe only 30 of those being very good to excellent. My macro hasn't been doing as well, mainly because my housing is locking up every few shots and it's tough to review for edification. Plus I hate shooting the 60mm and really want my 105mm, but the port won't be ready for another month. I have quite a few keepers, but they'll benefit from a bit of photoshopping to properly crop and adjust the exposures before they're ready for primetime. The reason why I blame my last tool is that the autofocus sucked, it didn't allow manual focus, the TTL was all fucked up, the lens too long for wide-angle, and the shutter lag hopeless. It made some nice macro pics on cooperative subjects, but that's about it. I have absolutely no doubt that I could take Dennis's point and shoot on the Great Barrier Reef and come up with a few nicer shots than what he posted, but everyone needs to start somewhere. The difference is that I wouldn't post a link to my starter shots and declare them "decent". |
