Remember one thing;

You have a learners permit.

OK, two things;

The enthusiasm you feel now is the best tool the dive shops have to sell you
all the shit you need to make a few bucks on ebay later.

Go diving, first. There's no real skills review in AOW, but I expect
everyone to have the basics down.

Congratulations on your certification.

The above advice is good: get some experience now and you'll get
more out of the AOW later.

Why jump in and get your AOW? I read that most divers never dive in
water deeper than 60 feet. Your PADI OW should cover that.

Someone told me that PADI really stands for "Put Another Dollar In."
Get some dives in before you decide to put another dollar in.

If I were you I'd buy my own equipment or upgrade the gear I have and
start diving local shore dives. Go places, meet people, do things...

Nitrox might be a cert worth pursuing. I hear you can double your
bottom time. Now that is worth putting another dollar in. I don't
know if PADI teaches it though.

Dive safe!

To be fair I would like to say that I received my Open Water Diver
certification through PADI. I had a positive experience and I
recommend PADI if you are considering getting your SCUBA certification.
I can't speak for all PADI schools, but the one I went to was taught
by an honest and experienced diver. He was so honest that he talked
his students into not buying pricey & useless equipment.

Dive safe!

Yup. I always tell my students to call 800 PAY PADI

I'd start by renting. Find out what you like and don't like. Nothing
like spending $400 on a BC that doesn't fit.

Most places require an "advanced" certification to do nitrox. But
that's still something for the future. Right now should be about
diving.

And it's not double. No where near.

Chilly,

Why do you think you're an idiot? I don't think you are. You seem to
be a very articulate and intelligent person.

I don't think the readers of this newsgroup are idiots. I come here to
learn from them and share what little knowledge and experience I have.

I look forward to learning from the knowledge and experience you and
others share in this forum. I hope we can all learn from each other.

Dive safe!
