| Reef Rescue end of year Thank you The staff at Reef Rescue offers a Holiday thanks to all of you whose efforts helped advance the protection of our coral reefs. Best Wishes for a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year. On the Horizon for 2008 Sewage The Florida State Senate is considering legislation proposed by the FDEP to finally shut down all the south Florida ocean sewer pipes. The ocean outfalls pump nearly half-a-billion gallons of minimally treated sewage into our coastal waters every day. This, at the same time we are running out of freshwater needed for Everglades restoration, irrigation and domestic supply. Broward and Miami-Dade Counties are fighting the FDEP proposal. Reef Rescue is working in Tallahassee to help pass the bill and acting locally to focus attention on the archaic practice of dumping our waste in the ocean. Beach Renourishment The Town of Palm Beach is moving forward with plans to pump more silty-sand onto the beaches near the Lake Worth Pier. While Reef Rescue has no official policy on beach renourishment we insist that if these projects are performed they must be done in full compliance with environmental regulations. If the Town moves ahead as planned in early 2008, Reef Rescue will be there to ensure all safeguards are met to protect the nearby coral reef ecosystem. Earth Day 2008 Kayak-a-thon Following the success of last year's event, Reef Rescue and Charity West Palm are teaming up again for an Earth Day Kayak-a-thon fund raiser to focus attention on the Lake Worth Lagoon. Follow the links on our web site to sign up now for the 2008 event. Updates Florida Dive Show a success This year's venue in Ft. Lauderdale allowed us to meet scores of new divers from Broward and Dade Counties and say hello to our old friends from Palm Beach. Welcome aboard to the hundreds who signed up to be part of the team. Web Site Update If you have not been there recently, visit our web site. We just added a link to a new 16 minute video that highlights our many ongoing projects. Surf the Sewer Shirt Resurrected. Our friends at Post-Larval Productions have redesigned the Surf-the-Sewer logo for our new push to focus attention on the Broward and Miami-Dade efforts to continue dumping sewage into the Atlantic. This is the T-shirt that endeared us to the Delray Beach sewer plant and City Council. The shirts make great gifts for your surfer and spring break friends or anyone on your gift list. If ordered now there is still time to get one by Dec. 24. Go to the on-line store through our web site. Thanks again for all your help in protecting our fragile coral reefs. We look forward to working with you all again in the coming New Year. Palm Beach County Reef Rescue www.reef-rescue.org |
