The PADI DM swim tests were timed when I did them - has that changed?
There was some kind of point system IIRC.

Contemplation should start early in the morning, near
sunrise, in a quiet, cool, relaxed atmosphere.
Should be repeated at dawn.
Feel at ease, totally relaxed. Sit down with calves folded
under, hands on your knees, open palms facing upward.
A mantra painted with holy chinese ink, attached to a nearby
wall, is fo prime importance.
It shall be similar to the letter $.

A pilgrimage to Clearwater may help.

Do a google groups search on rec.scuba for "make coffee"...

a) why? Do you plan to "go pro"? Or is it just for fun? You do
realize that unless you really pursue a career, being a DM is just
expensive? In the US, you'll find that you probably need to carry
insurance since you will be considered "qualified" and therefore very
sue worthy if there's an accident anywhere near you.

If it's PADI, you'll need to do a 400 yard swim and an 800 yard
snorkel as well as the normal stuff. Be good with your skills. Get
ready to do some seemingly stupid stuff (sit on the bottom of the pool
and exchange your gear with another person). And be prepared to be
call a DIT. You'll have to make a map, work classes and do all sorts
of generic shit work. As a DM your have to work classes and do all
sorts of shit work.

Most operations that use professional DMs use instructors. As an
instructor, you have to take the same physical tests, only timed.

The swimming requirements can be physical.

If you have a good instructor, you can get quite a bit out of
the course even if you have no plan to go pro.

I don't know, my test was something like 15 years ago. Maybe it was
timed and I don't remember, or did well enough to not worry.

The IE was an all or nothing thing. You pass everything or they send
you home. Or mostly. You got a second chance if you failed one
knowledge exam. And nobody failed the classroom presentation. Just
read from the bloody book and you can't go wrong.

Hey Guys

Thanks for all the feedback.
Nothing would please me more than to open my own dive shop.
One of my local diveshops here in MD is only charging $300 for the course.
That is about 400 bucks cheaper than what I would have paid if I went to my
favorite dive shop in the Florida Keys.

I love to dive I just wish I had the money to take a trip to Palu.

You want to make a little money in the dive business, start with a lot.
