The extent of suffering and death was high in Catholic countries like
Poland. Polish Catholics enthusiastically provided names of Jewish men,
women, and family to Nazi officials, so they could be arrested, property
taken, and most sent to concentration camps for death. One million Jews
could not have been located in Poland without the active support and
participation of Polish Catholics.

Aleksander Kwasniewski

Poland's ex-communist president likes the EU, historical truth, George Bush
and the odd tipple

Charlemagne

The Economist, 28 July 2001

POLAND'S president, Alexander Kwasniewski, is the key figure in selling his
country to the European Union and the EU to the Poles. Six months into his
second five-year term, and with the Czechs' Vaclav Havel soon to retire, he
is, at 46, also emerging as ex-communist Central Europe's leading statesman.
Witness his recent speech at Jedwabne, scene of a now notorious massacre in
1941. "The most important speech in post-war Polish history," a western
diplomat calls it. That is too much-remember the young Lech Walesa-but a
statesman's speech it was.

The massacre used to be blamed on the Nazis, who had just seized the town.
The truth, brought out by new historical studies, has shaken Poland to the
core. On July 10th, 60 years ago, Jedwabne's Jews were rounded up, savagely
beaten and then, those who were not dead already, burned alive in a barn-by
their Catholic neighbours. "Fratricide," Mr Kwasniewski calls it. At the
ceremony of remembrance, he wore a yarmulka and was flanked by rabbis. It
was an opportunity to put Poland in a better light with America's
ever-suspicious Jews. "But the speech was also for ourselves," says Mr
Kwasniewski. "We Poles have to look truth in the eye, any truth, and say: it
was so, it happened."

In the first half of 1938, numerous laws were passed restricting Jewish
economic activity and occupational opportunities. In July, 1938, a law was
passed (effective January 1, 1939) requiring all Jews to carry
identification cards. On October 28, 17,000 Jews of Polish citizenship, many
of whom had been living in Germany for decades, were arrested and relocated
across the Polish border. The Polish government refused to admit them so
they were interned in "relocation camps" on the Polish frontier.

Otto Buchholz was one of around 17,000 Polish Jews who were, on the 27th and
28th October 1938, taken into remand pending deportation, literally to be
handed over to Poland, whose citizens they still were but to whom they held
no allegiance and which attempted to permanently exclude them. Germany had
repeatedly deported Polish Jews over the previous two decades and Poland had
frequently refused to receive them, although these were individual cases
(altogether thousands). Both countries sought to rid themselves of an entire
section of the population, i.e. Polish Jews.

The year 1938.
The Polish law of 31st March 1938 "concerning the withdrawal of Polish
citizenship" presented Germany with the prospect of having to accommodate an
additional and larger group of stateless Jews. Following this law a Polish
citizen living abroad, who had done something detrimental to Poland or who
had lost connection to Poland during uninterrupted residence of five or more
years abroad or who, at the request of Poland, had not returned to Poland
within the statutory period, had his citizenship revoked. The expatriation
ruling that was issued by the minister of the interior on instruction from
the foreign minister required no justification and could be enforced
immediately.
This law, which was passed through both houses of parliament, the Seym and
Senat, within a period of a few days, was triggered by the German annexation
("Anschluss") of Austria. Poland feared that its around 20,000 Jewish
citizens resident in Greater Germany would return en mass to Poland in order
to escape German persecution. The deputy foreign minister Szembek confided
this to the French ambassador at a later date. This was made plain at the
time in the report to parliament. Prime minister

Jews were now driven out of all employment. Jewish doctors were not
permitted to treat Aryan patients. Likewise, Jewish lawyers were not allowed
to have Aryan clients. Jewish businesses were also forced to go through the
process of "Aryanization," whereby they were sold to Aryan competitors for
next to nothing. The Polish government saw the results of the Anschluss and
feared the immigration of newly destitute Jews. They quickly announced a new
ordinance requiring all Polish citizens abroad to apply for a reentry visa.
This policy did not, however, include Polish Jews living in Germany. The
German Government reacted immediately in October 1938 by deporting to Poland
fifteen thousand Jews of Polish citizenship, many of whom had been living in
Germany for decades. Though denied entry into their native Poland, Polish
guards kept masses of people in a no-man's land between Poland and Germany
after they were forced across the border by Nazi forces. Among the deportees
was Zindel Grynszpan. On the night of October 27, 1938, Zindel and his
family were driven from their home. Nazi stormtroopers confiscated their
small store and meager possessions. Left penniless, famished, and freezing,
they and other refugees were herded over the Polish border.8 His son
Herschel, who was living with relatives in France, heard of his family's
misfortune after receiving a letter from his sister. Frustrated and angry
that he was not able to help his family, Herschel walked into the German
Embassy on the morning of November 8 and shot a Nazi official.9

Poland
In occupied Poland the status of Volksdeutsche had many privileges but one
big disadvantage: Volksdeutsche were conscripted into the German army. The
Volksliste had 4 categories. No. 1 and No. 2 were considered ethnic Germans,
while No. 3 and No. 4 were ethnic Poles that signed the Volksliste. No. 1
and No. 2 in the Polish areas re-annexed by Germany numbered ~1,000,000 and
No. 3 and No. 4 ~1,700,000. In the General Government there were ~120,000
Volksdeutsche.

Volksdeutsche of Polish origins were treated by Poles with special contempt,
and also it constituted high treason according to Polish law.
