I can't speak for you.

I'm guessing I would not have responded effectively unless, of course, the
gun moved in Jayna's direction. Physically threatening her, in any way,
gets a pretty much instant response with as much violence as I can manage.
Nobody has been that stupid so far. My response to a threat to a friend is
not normally instant. I do not hesitate, but I do not react instinctively
either. Someone has been that stupid but, with a .380 suck in his right
nostril, very wisely stopped his attack and held very, very still. I wonder
if the heard the click of the safety coming off helped him decide.

At any rate, under other circumstances, I first have to realize something is
going on. This presumes that my first indication of a problem is the first
shot fired. Figure somewhere between a half a second and a half a dozen
seconds. I then have to identify the source and determine that it is not a
LEO doing his job properly. That's a very real, very significant concern
for me. While on the subject, it's also important for me to avoid making
his job harder by dividing his attention, something a second drawn gun has a
good chance to do. In the process, I also have to assess the environment,
identifying people in or near the line of fire and determine whether I can
fire effectively. That decision depends, a great deal, on the weapon I
have. With my .45 or .40, which I do sometimes carry, the answer is likely
to be yes. With my 9mm, which I don't normally carry, the answer is even
more likely to be yes. With my .380, the answer is almost certainly going
to be no. I can not trust a shot from that gun at more than a few feet.
So, final answer, I doubt that I would accomplish all of this before someone
as crazy as this guy was, could fire four times and then take his own life.
That, of course, does not mean that I would not be going through the process
anyway.

Seeing it coming would, of course, change things. If there were events that
drew my attention to the situation as it developed, the process would be
shortcut considerably. I tend to prepare for the worst while hoping for the
best.

Lee

I think Lee is underrating his reaction, but, the perp would have never
have gotten off a second round anywhere near me.

We don't have any details here, but in San Ysidro, they saw him coming in
from the parking lot.

After his first issue, Huberty calmly walked around shooting people in the
head.

A lot of people like Greg died trying to hide under tables and chairs.

Fuggedaboutit. All they needed was one armed super-scuban.
