Default Genesis Gear

I am new to diving (only 7 dives) but absolutely love it. I want to
purchase a dive system but don't want to invest a ton of money yet. I found
several packages at LeisurePro and the Genesis looks like it offers the most
bang for the buck. I also don't want to fall into the trap of getting
crappy gear that I will want to replace in a year. I would really like to
hear any opinions.

The package can be seen at
http://www.leisurepro.com/Prod/Categ...GT4.html?Hit=1

Also, are there any brands that I should avoid. I want good gear but not
necessarily the Lexus. Reliability, comfort and value are my top
priorities.

I'm sure questions like this get old but I really appreciate any input.

Thanks,
Scot

Get a BP/wing setup, bottom timer, and the best set of regs you can
afford at your LDS with only an SPG - no need for a complex console.
You won't wear out or outgrow the BP/wing and you will always have
service for your regs (unlkess the shop bellies-up.) Exposure
protection and the rest you can expect to change out or replace as your
diving conditions change.

Oh, and check the archives here. Even recently we had a huge thread
about purchasing gear for the first time.

Yes

No. Get a computer. Eventually, you may dive in places and ways where the
computer is not the best tool. By then, however, it'll be outdated anyway
and you can make a choice between the greatest of the day or something more
like Star suggests.

Probably. Best you can afford isn't that easy for a new diver. Most
expensive may not be best for your needs. At the very least, however, go
for a name brand. Apex is a name braind.

No, well, yes and no. You need a SPG. You may or may not need a console.
Where you put your stuff, whether you chose to get a computer or not, is up
to you. Star, however, failed to mention that you need a depth gauge and
compass of some type. You don't need the depth gauge or bottom timer if you
chose to get a computer. So, you'll be carrying a computer or depth gauge
and bottom timer, a compass and a SPG. All three will fit in a console that
is not much larger than, and worn approximately where Star wears her SPG.

If you buy a name brand, you'll have service for them even if your shop does
belly up. The same is not true if Leisure Pro fails.

Good advise.
