Default FLASH: Reef Rescue Wins - Outfall to be shut down

Just minutes ago, the SCRWT&DB voted unanimously (with extensive
bitching and grumbling) to undertake a project to redirect the effluent
from the Boynton/Delray sewer outfall into a well (eventually 2) some
3500 feet deep. The project is expected to cost $17 million, permit
applications will go to the state almost immediately (approval could be
as quick as three months, no longer than nine), and construction will
be complete in 18 - 24 months.

The sour apples in the group were the mayors of Boynton and Delray, who
did, though, vote with the majority.

This is a huge step forward to bringing Florida in line with the
civilized world which has been closing its sewer outfalls for a half
century.

Nevertheless, there are still five outfalls operating in South Florida,
and the Army Corps of Engineers has a huge backlog of renourishment
projects.
