| Yesteday I competed at the USA Powerlifting Minnesota State Championship in both the masters and 100 kilo (220 pound) open divisions. In spite of my upper back problem and a shitty training cycle, I had a pretty good meet. I did an easy triple with 485 in the squat a couple of weeks ago but never went heavier than 275 because of my back after that. But, it was the deadlift that suffered the most as even 225 was too much pain to pull in the weeks heading into the meet. When I got to the venue yesterday, I was 100.2 kilos, which would have put me in the 242s (110 kilo class) but I peed and spit a couple of times and weighed in 15 minutes later right on the nuts at 100 kilos. That made me properly weighted for the competition (I added this sentence to make this on topic for rec.scuba I opened up the squats at 227.5 kilos (501.5 pounds) and got that easy. I then jumped to 245 (540 pounds) and again got that easy. For my third, I went to 255 (562 pounds) and struggled a bit to get it out of the racks. I was thinking I should have them drop the rack height to 6 instead of 7 but I didn't and it cost me. I had trouble setting up and didn't get my feet as wide as I normally do. Plus, I was tipping forward a little when I got the squat command. I went down with the weight and I went forward as I was coming up and the weight stalled about half way up for no lift. In the bench, I opened at 147.5 kilos (325 pounds) and got that easy. I then jumped to 152.5 (336 pounds) for my second for another 3 white lights. We went 157.5 for my third. Well, that was all I had in me that day and I ground that out for 2 whites and a good lift. I don't know what I got called for by the one judge but I did hit the upright but it didn't aid me in any way. If anything, it made it harder. So I was at 402.5 kilos at sub total heading into the deadlifts. Again in warm ups, 225 hurt like hell as did 275. I did 315 for a single as well as 365 and 405. The 405 wasn't too bad, pain wise, and I felt a little more confident in doing my opener at 202.5 kilos (446 pounds), which is a pretty low opener for me normally. I pulled that on my first attempt rather easily but I hurt big time locking out. Took 210 (463 pounds) with the same result. I then jumped to 217.5 (480 pounds) for my third attempt. Well, I gutted that out just like my third attempt bench with the crowd again cheering me on and locked it out for a good lift. I ended up with a 620 (1366.5 pound) total and went 8 for 9 in my attempts. I took silver in the Masters I Powerlifting class, silver in the Masters I Bench class and bronze in the 100 Kilo Open Powerlifting class. Quite the hardware hog I'm a real hurting unit today. It would be nice to take a nice long dive on a shallow reef in the Keys right now. |

I've got a lot going on at work right now and I've got to start training right away for Masters Nationals, which is the first week of May. Actually, I won't work out again until Friday and I don't think I'll get a workout in the following week because I'll be up north for work that week. That only give me 6 working weeks until nationals. I might very well come down right after that though. I'm thinking definitely in May!!! BTW, Masters Nationals will be in Miami the first week of May next year and I may also go to Womens Nationals there in 2009. That will be the second week in February...for women's that is...and no, I won't be competing, just helping. |
