Just back from Indonesia. Old style dollar bills are not accepted anywhere except with a lengthy ID process at major banks. This is due to a huge counterfeiting problem; when the US changed bills the holders of counterfeits had to move offshore to move their stuff. My bank tells me it applies to all non-OECD countries. Get the big Jackson portraits ( these are the most coutnerfeited ones). New style dollars were accepted; but in rural places they preferred rupiah for smaller amounts. Euro's were surprisingly well accepted. Western cigarettes were also well accepted as tips. -- mrr |
