| Three explosions shook the Egyptian city of Sharm el-Sheikh and a nearby resort area, killing at least 30 people and wounding 107. I trust none of the locals denizens here are in the area currently. There needs to be an international decree on terrorists -- no bag limits. Buck |

At least 20 people have been reported killed in the blasts. The first blast reportedly occurred at approximately 0100 local time. More than 100 others have been injured. The first explosion occurred in the Old Market area where shops that are popular with tourists are located. Another explosion in the Naama Bay area damaged a four-star hotel. Among the hotels that were affected were the Ghazala Gardens and Movenpick hotels. SOS Comment Since October 2004, Egypt has experienced a number of bombing attacks that affected tourists. In October 2004, a series of explosions occurred in several hotels in the Sinai resorts of Taba and Ras Shitan, resulting in the death of 34 people, mostly Israeli tourists. Egyptian authorities said that attack was linked to Israeli-Palestinian violence. On 30 April 2005, an explosion occurred near the five-star Hilton Ramses hotel in Cairo, wounding at least seven foreign tourists. On 7 April 2005, an explosion occurred in a popular bazaar street in Cairo, killing two foreigners and wounding nine others. The perpetrators and motivations of the latest bombings in Sharm-el-Sheikh are still to be determined. Initial police investigation suggests that the explosions may have been caused by carbombs. Travel Advice At this time, International SOS members are advised to defer all non-essential travel to Sharm-el-Sheikh and nearby resort towns near Sinai for the next 48-hours. Members currently in these areas are advised to stay in their hotel and maintain a low profile for the next 48-hours. Foreigners in Egypt are advised to adopt extra security precautions against the increasing risk of further attacks elsewhere in the country. International SOS recommends that Members avoid spending excessive amounts of time near areas where tourists are known to congregate. Public places such as restaurants and cafes, shopping and market areas and malls, pedestrian zones, public buses and bus stops, and other crowded venues and the areas around them should also be avoided. Travel to the border area between Egypt and the Palestinian territories should be avoided. Members seeking additional information on this situation should contact the 24-hour Regional Security Centres in London or Paris on +44 (0) 208 762 8008 (London), or +33(0) 1 5563 3155 (Paris). |
