I would not advise traveling on those rickety old tubs that pass for
ferry service around Fiji. They don't have a good record for avoiding
accidents or maintining their boats or ferries. I've heard the same is
true for ferries that ply the waters around the 7,000 islands of
Indonesia.

I know...Fiji has become the new destination for the backpacker group,
now that they've left behind Cairns, Australia and everyone in that
crowd things it is cool to save money, GO NATIVE and stay in modest inns
that have on and off running hot water and the like, but.....GET REAL!
Don't risk your life to save a few bucks!

When I was staying at Raki Raki on Viti Levu and diving with Dan
Grenier, every morning I heard this very strange noise -
poccata-ta-poccata.... and I asked Dan -- "what the hell am I hearing
early in the morning?"

He said, "that's the ferry departing over to Vanua Levu."

I said, "oh, I'll bet that is an interesting way to traveling to get
over there instead of flying.

He said, "not on your life and told me about number of accidents they've
had!"

Wrong with indonesia. The official ferries (the pelnies) is build in
germany. And is safe to travel with. The only thing is :
Don't eat the standard class food.
Don't expect aircon.
Expect 1000īs of passengers.

I was on Kadavu about a month ago and heard that the ferry from Suva to
Kadavu had sunk. Do yourself a favor; save on other things and take a plane
to Kadavu. It's quick and you get spectacular views of the reefs around
Kadavu. We took airfiji http://www.airfiji.net/

With respect to accomodation, we stayed at Matava Resort
http://www.matava.com.au/ Highly recommended. We had a private bure with
shared facilities wich was clean and served us fine. They also have a dorm
if that suits your budget better. Food is superb and great diving too.
Rental diving equipment is good quality. If you want to see manta rays, go
to Matava. On the very first dive, we had two mata rays (3m spanwidth)
circling around us as we were decending from the boat. Richard (one of the
owners) mentioned that there's a 70% chance you see mantas at that spot.
