Default Fiji Crystal Divers Dan Grenier Lost at Sea

Is this real? We are shocked and saddened at the loss of the best Dive
Master we've ever dove with (May 00).

Undercurrent [maildist@undercurrent.org]:
Two Divers in Fiji Lost at Sea
======================
The American proprietor of Fiji's Crystal Divers, 54-year-old Dan Grenier,
disappeared while diving with fellow Aussie diver 27-year-old Danielle
Gibbons, and both are presumed dead. His wife, Alisi, was piloting their
boat and dropped Dan and the new diver (their kids' school teacher) at a
site on Vatu I Ra passage, then dropped other divers 150 yards away on the
other side of the reef. They returned, but Dan and his charge didn't.
Alisi searched desperately, and when others on shore were finally alerted,
they arrived in late afternoon to find 6 foot seas and winds gusting 35-40
mph. They called off the search and returned the next day, with planes and
helicopters joining in, but to no avail. Dan, who served both as a military
and commercial diver, had been pioneering new sites in Fiji for a decade.

Here are a few links for more details about this sad situation. My
SCUBA club dove with Dan back in Sep. 2001, he was a really capable
and nice guy. It's really sad and scary to see how easily things can
go wrong...

My husband, Richard and I dived with Dan and Alisi June 2003. This is a
terrible loss for Alisi, Fiji, and Diving. He was a wonderful guy and
fabulous diver. Sorry to hear of this terrible tragedy!!!
