| I have the chance to head to Fiji next February on a dive trip. Would be staying at the Koro Sun resort, doing mostly close boat dives with a few possible trips much farther out. Is this trip worth taking? Or should I use my money to go someplace else? Im not looking for the best diving in the universe. I just dont want it to be totally lame. I have been diving since 1983, so I know what decent diving should be. Any advice is greatly appreciated. |

I've been to Fiji twice. Trip reports are here http://www.pathcom.com/~bracuk/Trips/Fiji.htm and here http://www.pathcom.com/~bracuk/Trips/Fiji2004.htm. Suggestion number 1, look up the climate for that region of Fiji in February. It just might be the rainy season. Suggestion number 2, if you do go to that resort, bear in mind that luggage might be an adventure. On our first trip, we had to go from Nadi to Savusavu (as will you). I don't remember all the details but I do remember: - there was a luggage limit. - based on total cargo weight, which included the passengers, some luggage, mine for example, arrived on a later flight. Have a good time whatever you decide. | February is right in the middle of the Fiji cyclone season.....I once came to Fiji in the aftermath of one of those terrible storms -- which wiped all corals off the reef down to a depth of 30 feet or 10 meters. You know, if you were a backpacker traveling on a shoe-string, there is a ferry that plies the waters between the two big islands...I heard it taking off one morning - ta pock-ata, ta pock-ata..... a rikety old tub -- hardly seaworthy. I was staying near Raki-raki and diving with Dan (whatisname?)..oh yes, "Grenier.". I asked at the desk "will my bure or cabin be quiet"...the hotel clerk said "Yes, excepting the departure of the interiland ferry in the morning." I'm sure that there is no weight limit on the ferry, if you want to take your life into your own hands!!! Don't let one of Fiji's cyclones get in the way of enjoying your diving trip! | If you want to save some cash, you could always try here in Phuket Thailand, the diving is great, and since the Tsunami, everyone has dropped their prices in a big way to try to get people coming back here. You should also be able to get a great deal on one of the liveaboards to the Similan Islands, and Richelieu rock, if that appeals to you, just be careful what ones you book on, its not always clear from the price what's good and what's not. All the websites look fantastic, but when you are stuck on a boat for 3-5 days its not so hot that your DM or Guide doesn't speak any language that YOU have ever heard, or that the food sucks, Equipment is crap, Etc. If you need a point in the right direction, feel free to E-Mail me, I don't think I will be here anymore by then, but I have been on most of the boats here quite a bit over the past five years. Cheers D Vince |
