The Luxfer trade-in program is not a recall, nor is it attempt to remove "faulty" tanks from the scuba community. http://www.luxfercylinders.com/news/...17.shtmlLuxfer info A debate about who is "at fault" and who should bear the costs on a commercial trade-in program is not relevant. Could it be that Luxfer may be attempting to sell more scuba tanks by offering a coupon? The car companies offer trade-ins all the time to move new cars. What's the difference here? In this case, the trade in is the returned tank to Luxfer, which can be sold for scrap value to offset the "cost" of the coupon. Seems the dive shops interest in participating in such a program is commercial also...sell a new tank and possibly wet suits, masks, valves, fins, etc. It gets divers in the stores doesn't it? Seems like everyone wins here. The diver gets a new discounted tank with a higher tech alloy, the dive shop sells at the minimum a new tank and possibly more, and the manufacturer increases their business of selling scuba tanks. Now if a dive shop is concerned from a safety aspect, then it is the dive shop's prerogative to improve the trade-in by lowering costs and generating goodwill from some divers. I'm sure some folks will take such a shop up on an "enhanced" trade-in. Just know that everyone is not as concerned as a few on this board, and they will continue to use their 6351 tanks because they maintain them and have them thoroughly inspected as required. Some shops are advertising that they will not fill Walter Kidde tanks at all and will stop filling 15-year-old tanks after December 31st. That is the dive shops choice to mitigate any perceived dangers, however, divers that want fills for these tanks may look upon these shops as forcing their own trade-in program to make a buck. Myself, I don't own any of the tanks eligible for the trade-in. However, I look at it like tires on a car. Your life depends on those tires and your life depends on the tanks. Take care of them. If you abuse them, eventually you'll need to replace them. For 15 or 20 years of use and $150 for a setup, I wouldn't hesitate to upgrade to newer technology (just like I wouldn't drive on bias ply tires now that the new technology radials exist. Heck they came out 25 years ago). Technology improves everything over time. Sometimes you have to choose to invest in new technology knowing you got your money's worth from your old equipment. -- Posted via Deeper Blue [ http://www.deeperblue.net ] freedive.scuba.travel - The Online Resource for the Underwater World |
