From what I've heard, upper 40's/low 50's F, which means that a 7mm
Farmer John will suffice for a not-too-deep, not-too-long (and
not-too-many) dives, but its not really enough to prevent you from
getting cold, which will trash your air consumption and overall dive
enjoyment.

Real men have done a ~39F dive in a wetsuit. Smart men won't do such a
thing again

100% accurate.

I did two years here in a 7mm FJ.

After I hit 250, it was like a thick t-shirt, and never recovered.

I have been with Dinky Dave in Agamemnon at 250 on mix;

It was the biggest fucking blue Smurf you ever saw. Suit, skin, lips, all of
it.

Kane did it too (to about 80 fsw), with no hood, but he wont cop to it
anymore.

I certified in 34F water in a wetsuit. Coldest dive I did was 31F, also in a
wetsuit.

Of course, I was in the Air Force at the time. Not like those Army pansies who
need drysuits and argon.

You like the smell of burning rubber? <grin>

Because when I was drying gloves, I was on a boat, and wanted to use
them the next day, not the next week.

Yeah, I remember SoCal beach water being somewhat cool... Even the surfers
were wearing wetsuits... I remember around 1981 diving in Blue Springs and
it didn't seem cool even without a wetsuit... Might have had something to do
with having to hike probably a mile through basically jungle carrying
doubles and the rest of my gear to get there... Mr. Heatstroke was coming to
visit... That 68F water felt really good... Damn, I'm glad they have that
boardwalk there now and you can park a lot closer...

Wouldn't it actually be safer than a commercial unit since you built it to
keep yourself alive?

Just a thought...
