Default snorkling breathing technique

I am new to snorkling, and scuba for that mater, have just started my PADI
course, and have been out snorkling a few times just to get in the water,
wondering if anyone can offer me some wise old advice about breathing
techniques for scubadiving, breath holding kinda stuff, things to do and
dont do etc. i want to stay down longer and i have a feeling i am
exhausting myself getting down under and then needing to surface way to
soon.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Suggestions:
1.) NEVER hold you breath in scuba... even if the regulator falls out of
your mouth, just blow bubbles.
2.) Breathing techniques... I use the Nike approach: just do it.
3.) If you are taking the Internet/CD based course, go find an instructor
who is willing to spend some time teaching you the finer points. If you are
in a classroom setting, listen to what the instructor tells you.
4.) I assume that when you say you want to stay down longer, you are
referring to snorkeling. If that is the case, your best bet is to keep
doing it and you'll get better. You might also see if you can find someone
to teach you how to surface dive (although this should be covered in your
PADI course).

snorkling:
- breath normally while on the surface
- when you want to go under, take 2-3 deep breaths, and then go down.
If you breath very deeply too many times, you will cause the opposite
effect
- move slowly
- on your way up, tilt the head back, and start blowing air through
the snorkel before you reach the surface. that way the air will force
the water out more easily

scuba:
- don't hold breath by closing your throat
- move slowly -- in fact, do everything slowly. When you think you
are doing things slowly, slow down a little more...
- don't overweight yourself -- the more weight you put, the more you
need to compensate with BCD
- breath deep and slow: this promptes gas exchange, quick shallow
breaths cause a lot of wasted air because it never gets to your lungs
(they should explain this during the course)
- often, the technique is: inhale, pause, exhale, inhale, pause,
inhale... note: the pause is not the same as holding breath, your throat
should still be open
- be streamlined: the more resistance you cause while moving through
water, the more energy you need to propel yourself, the more air you use.
- keep warm

/Marcin

It is amazing how little one can find on the net on snorkeling. And these
couple of advices from Marcin Dobrucki are much more than I was able to find
on this topic myself. Anybody knows where to find more info on web?

Thanks,
N.

Take a breath in, and exhale. Keep doing this and you will be fine.
