Ok, now I see it useless! The red dot is to small to be usefull in the water, during the night you'll use your normal torch instead. Henning hsb@(fjernes)image.dk |

It looks like (or a copy of) the Trident model. I did some T&E on several UW lasers and this was the best bang for the buck. It nets at $17 with a retail of $34. It is theoretically illegal to sell in the United Snakes because consumer level lasers are required by law to have only a "momentary on" type switch. Bureaucrats be damned, it was still much easier using it's compression bezel (screw tighten the top) than any fancy aluminum model with a rubber push button that hurt your finger. The lasers are indeed quite useful if you spend your dive pointing out critters to newbies... outlines of scorpionfish; arrow/secretary/sailfin blennies and other micro mini fish; light sensitive critters including orange ball corellamorphs, etc. If you aren't a "teacher", you don't need a pointer. -- Doc _(:)0 "I'm hiding in Honduras, I'm a desperate man, Send Lawyers, Guns & Money...The sh*t has hit the fan" -Warren Zevon |

There is another use for underwater laser pointers besides teaching. ROVs are frequently equipped with cameras that provide (at best) monocular vision, making depth perception rather difficult. Often times an operator will strap on a laser pointer focused some feet away from the vehicle yet in the camera's field of vision, thus providing a point of reference. Sometimes it even works. Yeah, I built a dual laser pointer "framer" for a macro geek using a Nikonos. Instead of those damaging and invasive framers, we set up two laser pointers on a tray that was on the bottom of the Nikonos. When the camera was just the right distance away, the dots came together in a triangulation. The flash easily washed away the dots. It worked well. > > Galen Hekhuis NpD, JFR, GWA ghekhuis@earthlink.net > A penny saved gathers no moss -- Doc _(:)0 "I'm hiding in Honduras, I'm a desperate man, Send Lawyers, Guns & Money...The sh*t has hit the fan" -Warren Zevon |

Sounds like all you did was to take one of UW Photo Tech's "Spot Shot" brackets and replaced the AA or AAA flashlights with lasers. FWIW, here's a page that has some photo's of the hardware: http://www.underwaterphotographie.co...type_macro.htm I believe that Fred stopped producing/selling the Spot Shot a few years ago, but you can still find them around. Here's two of them: http://www.helixcamera.com/UW/nikonos.html -hh |
