Default Pro-Ear 2000 by Oceanic, any comments?

Hi,

I was just wondering if anyone in this newsgroup has any opinion on the
Oceanic Pro-Ear 2000 dive mask.

Be it good or bad experiences, it will be greatly appreciated.

If you have ear problem and found this unit to be of great help in the
continuation of diving, then I most want to hear from you. A friend has a
minor natural tear in her ear drum and it floods whenever she goes
underwater, so it will be of great assistance if you know whether Pro-Ear
2000 can help in cases like this.

Thank you all.

CN

A friend of mine is an instructor and was told she was never going to dive
again due to a tumour in her ear caused by water.

She is not allowed to get any water in her ear as it may cause the tumour to
reappear and also the eardrum failed to seal after the operation.

However after much research and testing of the pro-ear 2000 mask she is now
back in the water with a full HSE medical to dive.

I would say give it a go, but test it thoroughly before going to open water
and ensure any buddy diving with you knows of the implications if it does
flood.

I had serious trouble with my right ear last year and early this year,
with a hole in my ear drum!. So bad that I could not dive for 6
months. After being cleared by the Doc, he advised that I should keep
the ear dry. Eventually (April 03) I bought a Pro-Ear mask. I had to
get a hood too suit as well. I also had to have my hair cut back quite
a bit to allow the ear cups to seal.
I've had mixed performance. After trials in the pool, which went OK, I
did some open water dives. About 50% of the dives the thing leaked.
When it stayed dry, it was good. When it leaked it was horrid. Worse
than using a regularf mask because the leaks were slow and relentless.
In addition to the leaking, it whistles loudly. Every time I exhale
into the mask I get this high pitched squeak from one or both ear
cups. It caused some consternation in the pool, as several members
thought their dive computers were going apeshit.

I've gone back to using a regular mask.

My opinion: If you can get the thing to stay sealed, it's a goood
idea. Provided you can stand the noise.

There are unfortunate pictures of me with my special hood, before
putting the mask on. My ears appear to stick out a long way. Slight
adjustment with Photoshop rendered me a relative to spock!

Hi
The pro is an excellent piece of Kit designed for ear clearance problems,
however I am not sure how much water it will let in, although it does seal
over the ears. Still in this instance try one out, most dive shops will lend
you one.

What do you mean by "clearance"? Do you mean "equalisation", or do you mean
getting the water out after the dive?

R.

I've sold a couple of these, but haven't heard anything back from the
purchasers. I have read user reviews all over the net and some people
swear by them.

Blessings and safe diving,
Tom
