Backplate and harness with a wing.

Don't look like much but it is the best. a Stainless steel plate is
generally best but an aluminum is better if you fly to dive locations
(weighs less).

You give the best recommendation but he said the latest and that would be
the vest type.

"Backplates" were not called by that name and were form fitting and
comfortable.
Wings were called horseshoes and the harness was abandoned by everybody as
soon as quick release came out but the only thing older in the nature of a
true BS is the horse collar.

Backplate and wing. Try Oxycheq.

He said latest technology and, to many of us, that's still the plate and
wing. Personally, I started with a backpack, no BCD, then discovered the
wonders of a BCD. It was a bit improvement. Then I discovered the plate
and wing, an even bigger improvement. The only thing that's tempted me to
try anything else is Mike Gray's BCD which, for the life of me, I can't
remember the name of and he's not talking as much lately. He must be
diving.

If there was a best most people would be using nothing but that one. There is no
best.

It may be the latest in your mind but every time I see a picture of a DIR
diver with a short haircut I think it dates from the 50's.

The backplates were far more comfortable then and nobody has caught up withy
some of the features of the AT-PAC. I'm still convinced that *in* the water
the weights belong between tank and my back. What that did out of the water
was put about 3 inches of lever arm on the tank...

I also liked the AT-PAC vest, which was just like a dry land vest with one
pocket and Velcro fastener.

That's not true at all.

Many people haven't been exposed to anything more or less than what the shop
they got instructed at sells.

I didn't start quite that far back. The first plates I used were not
contoured. They were simple pieces of metal with metal straps to fasten
them to tanks and web straps to fasten them to me. The first devices that
looked like today's plates were plastic and later, hard rubber. It was a
long, long time before I saw the first metal one.

If there is an inovation that is clearly superior it's just a matter of time before
it becomes generally adopted. Individual shops cannot keep innovation down. You can
cite examples of this with technology in the past. Even the design of scuba gear: the
on demand diaphragm regulator, the change from J valve to pressure gauge, the change
from horse collar to today's BCDs, from single stage to two stage regulator, etc.

So, where is the "zeitgeist" line drawn?
