Avoiding The Bends
Leroy Chiao and Salizhan Sharipov now have completed breathing in a supply
of pure oxygen, a procedure carried out to rid their bodies of nitrogen that
could bubble up in their bloodstream and cause a painful or even deadly case
of decompression sickness, known to SCUBA divers as "the bends."
The depressurization of the Pirs airlock is nearly complete. The spacewalk
should begin within the next few minutes.
