Wow.. made it thru rescue diver. How? I had well over 100 divers before
even considering my self even being close to have the necessary diving
skills to "save" someone. Try a different mouthpiece. There are several
to choose from. How could you "rescue" someone when you yourself are
having "gag reflex" problems.

Wayne, you might want to take your mouthpiece to a dentist and let him
examine you and it.

Not knowing what kind of mouthpiece you have; there are some newer models
out that involve molding to fit your teeth. This allows you to not have to
bite while breathing.

Understand also that your gag reflex is psychological. If it were not, then
you would have starved to death long ago.

Yes, there are full face masks used in very cold water or polluted
environments. If your local dive shop can't help, search on line.

A gag reflex is a back of the throat thing for most people.
Ingore teh inane comments of the others.
What causes you to gag?

Incidentally a gag reflex usually happens when "Receptors in the throat
detect a stimulus and muscles are reflexively activated"

It can be overcome in many people but is a defense mechanism and about as
"psychological" as what happens when you touch a hot stove.

I am a dentist and I see "psychological" gag reflex very often. Sometimes
just the thought of something being placed in the mouth is enough to
activate the reflex.

The glossopharyngeal reflex, the protective gag reflex, that you speak of is
located farther back into the mouth. Again, it becomes psychological for
most people, otherwise he would not be able to swallow food.

He can practice cleaning his tongue with a tongue cleaner and progressively
"de-sensitize" his gag reflex.

Learned de-sensitization of the gag reflex is something that many denture
wearers have to do.

Default gag reflex

I am cursed with a low gag reflex. I have made it through rescue diver
trainer and would love to really start enjoing diving. Anyone know if a
full face mask would eliminate the need for an in the mouth regulator?
