I would choose a Mares M1 - but that's just because I have one and I
really like it.

You use the Vytec, the Vyper cannot use the wireless AI transmitter.

Vytecs used to be quite pricy compared to Vypers (if you didn't need
the extra features), but now you can get them for a very reasonable
price because of the introduction of Vytec DS.

I use the Vyper and it does the job with easy to read display. Has nice dive log info
and water temp. Only complaint is the PC interface--mine has the serial port and has
to pressed down to the computer during download.

After researching the different algorithms I chose Suunto.

That was the deciding factor for me too.

I gather the recall didn't affect you?

IIRC, isn't there also something in how the Vytek is a lot more
diver-friendly for ...(trying to recall here)... is it the Oxygen Clock
on Nitrox dives?

I'm trying to recall which feature/factor it is that was made
significantly more conservative on the Cobra and Vyper...my recollection
is that its not immediately obvious in the specifications, but for those
in the know, its why you should by the Vytec instead of either one.

Diver friendly or diver limiting? The original Suunto algorithm calculates
MOD based on a oxygen percentage one point higher than what is entered. It
provides a lower limit than is justified by the standard calculation. On
top of that, it significantly penalizes divers who reach a PPO2 of 1.4 or
more. This is all on top of being noticeably more conservative on deco
calculations than any other popular computer.

The Suunto line gained great fame not because of the quality of their
computers, but because of the quality of their gauge mode, the depth to
which they work in gauge mode and their storage of detailed data about the
dive. They are one more of many things DIR that apply only in the context
of how they are used by those that developed the DIR system.
