I guess opinions vary. I've seen only one thing he's credited with writing
that I thought was well written. My guess was that somebody ghost wrote it
for him. It was his story, for sure, but it didn't look like his words.

Default DIR gear questions

How do you obtain DIR style gear, such as regulators? Do you buy hose
kits from Halcyon, or do you have your hoses custom made?

What brands/types of regulator meets the specification for being field
stripped under water?

>From the GUE web site:

"The second stage NEEDS to be able to be stripped under water, just in
case there is debris under the exhaust valve or it has moved (i.e.
folded back) causing the second stage to breathe wet. As such, the face
plate needs to be removable without any tools, while wearing gloves."

A variety of companies make longer and shorter hoses. You should be able to
find what you want at any shop that supports technical diving.

He can get his questions answered here better.

Scubaboard is a moderated forum where free thought and disagreement is not
allowed, and the "DIR" qualifications of -some-, not all, of their "experts"
are somewhat dubious at best.

I have to disagree. I think that an intelligent person can visit the forum
and make their own decision. Since I don't know you or your qualifications,
it is impossible to judge your expertise on the matter either.

Intelligence, there, has always been defined as those that agree with George
Irvine. Everyone else was labeled "farm animal stupid." Popeye's
qualifications include having been threatened with legal action by George's
lawyer. Does that help?

The general impression I get is that some/many people are so turned off
by George Irvine's attitude that they won't even look at some of the
things in DIR which they might otherwise find to be good.

George's book is (A) poorly written, (B) mostly attitude, (C) not really
a good, understandable explaination of DIR (in the sections where he does
actually try to describe/explain it), and, to be sure, (D) way overpriced.

Other opinions will vary; I hope mine is clear.

My mileage varies.

I never heard of a book that George wrote.

JJ wrote one, worth it's weight in gold.

He was kind enough to autograph mine, a story in itself.
