Default Spiro Lady BCD - Advice please anyone?

Hi All

I've just secured an immaculate second-hand Spiro Lady BCD for my wife but I have a couple of questions about the built-in emergency inflator cylinder, a device I've never come across before.

1. Can the jacket be used without this device?
2. If so, should the built-in valve be protected in some way, and how? It seems to have a standard A-type fitting, I guess there must be some kind of cover or cap I could use?

Any tips greatly appreciated

Rgds
