Too late, it's sold. A 1.3 megapixel SeaLife Reefmaster camera.

This turned out to be quite an eventful auction. It was my first ever
eBay auction as either a buyer or seller. I made some rookie mistakes,
including making it a 10 auction instead of 7 (had to pay extra).

I got lot's of questions, including two requests to end the auction
now. I also had over 30 people who were "watching this item".

Now the money. I did a bit of research and noted that these cameras
normally sold for about $100, so I put in a minimum opening bid for
$50. I was absolutely delighted when I actually got a bid.

Fastforward to the end of the auction. With 56 seconds left, there had
been 22 bids, and the price was $187.50. There were two active bidders
who seemed to be bidding against each other. One of them was the
person who had posted the original bid. There were 8 other people who
had made bids during this auction.

56 seconds later.

25 total bids.

Bought by someone who had not bid previously.

For $222.50.

How cool is that?

Congrats! Nicely done; you set up a very attractive auction and were
rewarded well.

Those nice pics probably got the bidders into a real frenzy which is a
tribute to your photographic skills.

Yeah, it must have been pretty cool to watch those bids coming in! I'll
bet you jumped a Molson when it ended! 8^)

Dan,
I was watching it myself more out of curiosity than anything else, but
it looked like you did quite well. I only hope the buyer comes through
for you and doesn't back out. I have had that happen to me once.

What I see a lot on auctions is "sniping". There are programs set up
specifically to bid on an auction right at the last few seconds so no
one else can get in there and run it up higher.

There are some tactics you can use to enhance your sales such as ending
the auction on a weekend or in the early evening when most people are
going to be around to bid on it. The pictures you included were a GREAT
selling tool. Showed the capabilities of the camera. You started the
bidding low which got a lot of people interested in it. I think you
were smart not to end the auction early because (1) I think its against
Ebay rules and (2) it was likely you would get more than was being
offered anyway.

Ebay can really be a sellers market and you can get more for your item
than if you tried to sell it at the local dive store or through a
newsgroup listing. Much depends on the item. Obviously you had a
pretty good commodity. Overall, I have to say I have had good luck with
Ebay. Several years ago, I partially flooded my camera housing and a
Sony FD7 digital camera. The camera wasn't totally ruined. It would
play back pictures but would not take pictures. Since the housing was
specifically for the FD7, I went on Ebay and bought a replacement for
$185. However, during my search, I noted some broken cameras were
selling also. So I listed my camera and was very specific that it had
been exposed to saltwater and was defective. A fellow bought it for
$125 anyway. I think he took those cameras and got them for parts. The
LCD screen and the floppy driver were still good in it.
