| My trip to Nosi Be was not recent...but I doubt things have changed any...maybe gotten worse. It is a very difficult country to visit, expensive visa fee (for US citizens), etc. Lots of pickpockets in the capital city. Watch out! One of the few resources the country has is graphite ...isn't that the material they use in pencils. No wonder they're so poor. Lots of erosion too! They cut down the trees to make way for agricultural use and you can see the damge from the window of an airplane -- as I flew up to Nosi Be I got a good look. Lots of that orange soil eroded away into the sea -- the sea stained for miles around the mouth of rivers leading into the Indian Ocean. Cloudy viz also, even in Nosi Be which is off the coast of "La Grand Terre." Fish life just so-so. Interesting country to see, limurs and all that, but so run down. Who goes there? I met some fun-loving Italians at the Residence Amboitaloca on Nosi Be and I guess that some Europeans and the curious make the effort. | I dived off Nosy Be, a beautiful island on the Northeastern tip of Madagascar. There was a French guy who had an operation, was it Pascal, or something like that? He always seemed to have a cigarette dangling out of his mouth. He also ran trips out into the Mozambique channel -- I think there are some islands out there that barely kiss the surface of the ocean -- reefs, really. Reef island like you find out beyond the GBR in Australia. But the viz off Nosy Be and sourrounding small islands was not the best.....those muddy rivers, you know, staining the Indian Ocean so far out, affecting islands off Madagascar.
