Hi Gary. I visited your website. Nice protographs!. Just some questions.
In first place, how bleached did you find the corals in the Maldives? At
your opinion, how much coral is dead? Is the dead coral everywhere?
Or, ideed, it depends on what zone are you diving? Did you find hard
corals in good shape?
And now some questions about Velavaru. Has it a good house reef easily
accesible form shore, with good snorkelling? How long were (average) the
dhoni rides to the diving points? Thanks!

Oski,
To answer your questions, The Coral bleaching was not as bad as we
expected it to be, it is about the same as it was in March this year at
Vakarufalhi, it is now starting to grow again. There is some dead coral on
most of the reefs as for how much this varies depending on the reef
locations. There were a lot of Hard corals in good condition mainly on the
inner reefs.
Now onto the diving side of things, Velavaru does have a so called house
reef, it is 10 minutes away on the Dhoni. They do 2 free snorkel trips a day
to the "House Reef ". Dive sites are from 10 to 60 minutes away although
there is a all day trip on the odd occasion.
Hope this helps you.
We had a great time at Velavaru but have no plans to return. My Wife said
try Vakarufalhi it is the best place we have been to and are planning a 3rd
visit in 2005
Happy Diving
