Default Dive operation in Gozo?

Any recommendations (or outfits to avoid)? We're BSAC sports divers with
around 200 logged dives each.

I stayed in the Atlantis hotel a couple of years ago, and dived with the
guide who worked there, whose family I think ran the hotel, and I could not
fault him or the hotel.

We dived out of season so we were the only divers, which was an advantage,
but I found him to be very good, and he was always spot on with his dive
briefings

Can thoroughly recommend Atlantis Diving Centre in Marsalforn. Got back
yesterday from my 7th trip in as many years and, as always, found it a very
friendly and professionally run operation. The diving is good (IMHO better
than in Malta) and most of the stes should be available at your level of
experience. Have a look at their website at www.atlantisgozo.com which also
has information about the hotel where the centre's based. If you go, give
my regards to Brian who runs the centre.

I've heard of Atlantis, but not St. Andrews - do you have a web address, or
other details?

I whole heartedly agree with the above.
Took my first (and only) video of a seahorse, good diving and experianced
crew too and the hotel was not bad either. You do need to be fit as one or
two of the dive sites required quite a long walk down to the dive site, one
in particular down over 150 steps if I remember correctly. But do not let
that put you off - its a great team to dive with. Enjoy you holiday.

www.gozoaquasports.com

Used them as a base for dive info and cylinders. Very well organised
outfit, cylinders rotated and filled (NO2 to order). There is a wash\drying
room with 3 seperate wash bins :- 1 for big dirty stuff like wetsuits BCs
etc, 1 for delicate stuff computers torches etc and 1 for personal stuff
like mask snorkel regs. It keeps the peeed-in wetsuits away from your
mouthpiece. Every other outfit we saw seemed reasonable although most cater
for der taucher.. Gozoaquasports is run by a cockney lass and her scandic
husband 8 out of 10 staff are English and a aquaitance works for them. Dont
use Frankie's 'award winning dive centre' heard too many bad things about
it.

Since you are competent divers get your selves a diving permit (take photos
and medical cert with you) as this allows you to dive without a guide -
guided dives work out 2.5 times as much. Added to this recommend you get a
jeep (thats if you can bare the sub standard condition) as most of the
island is shore diving, this will still work out cheaper than guided dives.
If you find a site blown out, you can zip over to the other side of the
island in 25 minutes. The island itself is naff as a holiday destination,
dont expect breakfast B4 11am, and eat only where the dive instructors eat
(captains table in Malsaform and a Pizza place in a town on the east side.)

Take plenty of illumination as there are alot of caves\blowholes to look
into and the night diving is excellent (M'Garr Xi Xini) is by far the best
as it's shallow (6-12m), damn easy to climb into (kit up on the concrete
jetty) and damn easy to navigate. Oh yeah its full of sea horses, cuttle
fish, octupii etc who seem to put on a show just for divers.

We managed 15 dives in 5 days most at less than 30m (dont recommend the MY
Xlendi - its upside down, not inhabited and stipped of all fittings, it was
meant to be an artificial reef, but some bozo from gozo buggered up the
ballast on the way down to 20m, it hit a reef and turned turtle at 45m -
hence not worth a dive on a single cylinder)

Mail off line for any further info

Take my advice, stick to air or nitrox.

Pete

St Andrews? Nice crowd, but I do have objections of kitting up in the middle of the street! Would
try somewhere else next time.
