Default Malta - Recommendations......

HI,

Planning to take a trip to Malta in the next 4-6 weeks to sample the diving
there for a week with a mate......

Both PADI AOW level with our own full set of equipment.

Any recommendations on dive site/locations, local clubs, accommodation, must
sees, etc. greatly appreciated.

Heard a snippet of info that Cathedral Caves is good, can anyone
comment.....

Cheers
Daren

No It's just round the headland to the left from the Blue hole / Azure
window
on Gozo.

A very interesting dive but you really need to go in from above it
rather than the Blue hole entry point. It's a bit (2-3m) of a high entry
and
looks intimidating as hell to begin with.

If you enter there do the cave (it's really a big bowl under and not
confined
at all) then follow round with the wall on your right you
can exit at the Blue hole for that lovely lovely walk back!

Well worth doing.

I would agree with Strand diving being good, Rozi, etc, but not HMS Maori.
You have to get ther very early to avoid the low viz kicked up by the hoards
and tthe rather itneresting entry/exit.

I agree the entry and exit can be a little "difficult" especially if
there is a bit of a swell.
As for getting the viz kicked up, this can be a problem. But still a
nice wreck to get inside. Alternatively do it as a night dive as we did
once, much better.

All good dives, plus Subway run trips to Comino as well, see

It is on Gozo, but not where you describe. It's actually on the noth coast,
about 2 miles west of Reqqa Point and is diveable by boat. The top of the
entrance to the cave is at about 8m and once you're inside you can surface
inside a large domed cave - hence Cathederal. The reflected light entering
the cave gives the entrance a wonderful azure colour.

At the back of the cave is a smaller but safely divable passage which leads
to the base of a man-made well which was used to draw water for salt making
when condirtions were too bad on the Reqqa salt pans.

This one's Coral Cave. If conditions are right, you can do it from an
easier entry than this. Go down as if you were going in at the Blue Hole
but when you get down to the entry plateau turn left and go in over the top
of the reef. There's a swim through which takes you out over the wall and
the cave is just below you and to the left.

Agreed - despite the walk!

IMHO the diving on Gozo is better than Malta for fish / scenery but if you
want wrecks then Malta has it. Both can suffer from very restricted diving
if the weather gets iffy. Dived for many years with Strand in St Pauls on
Malta and can recommend them or Atlantis on Gozo. Most of the dive schools
on Malta offer a day on Gozo - either by van with an early ferry crossing -
or by boat, usually from St Pauls.
